Beyond the Algorithm: The University’s Role in Shaping the AI Society
The integration of artificial intelligence into universities has accelerated significantly, with AI systems increasingly employed to augment human decision-making processes. As these technologies advance in sophistication and performance, they offer considerable potential for generating actionable insights across a broad spectrum of domains. Nevertheless, the widespread deployment of AI hinges critically on the establishment of user trust in these systems.
Trust is fundamentally linked to transparency and comprehensibility. When research institutions possess a clear understanding of technology’s inner workings and can verify its safety and reliability, they are more likely to accept and rely upon its outputs when using it for teaching and research. Universities are working on trustworthy AI models that are secure against manipulation and tampering. Achieving this level of trustworthiness requires mechanisms that allow researchers to interrogate the system’s reasoning, understand the logic underpinning its conclusions, and engage with it in a meaningful and interpretable manner.
In this free webinar open to the public, university presidents from the Glion Colloquium Program Committee and leaders from global computer science research institutions will discuss, exchange and dialogue on this challenge and provide insights into how they see creating the future we want.
PANELISTS:
- Prof. Michael SCHAEPMAN, Rector, University of Zürich; Vice-President, Glion Colloquium Association (Chair of the Webinar)
- Dr. Alessandro CURIONI, Vice President Europe and Africa and Director IBM Research Zurich
- Other Higher Education Leaders (tbc)
THE GLION COLLOQUIUM
The Glion Colloquium Association has established itself as an influential resource in addressing today’s global challenges and elucidating the responsibilities of the world’s research universities. Over the past 25 years, over 300 leaders in higher education, business and government agencies have participated in the Glion Colloquium, a forum where research university leaders consider together the challenges, solutions and role that the world’s foremost universities should play in addressing the great challenges and in harnessing the many opportunities of our times.
